About JIMOLocated in La Jolla, California, the Joint Institute for Marine Observations (JIMO) is housed on the campus of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO) of the University of California, San Diego (UCSD). Established in 1991, JIMO is one of eleven Joint Institutes within the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) , Oceanic & Atmospheric Research (OAR) office. The objective of every Joint Institute is to unify the resources and expertise of a research-oriented university or institution with OAR and other NOAA branches in an effort to develop and maintain a center of excellence in research into understanding the Earth's oceans and atmosphere. In this way, JIMO signifies the long history and ongoing partnership between Scripps Institution of Oceanography and NOAA/OAR. In addition to UCSD/SIO, JIMO also oversees NOAA funding for all of the University of California (UC) in a multi-campus effort to promote collaboration and resource pooling. As a diversified base of collaborators, JIMO comprises a wide variety of pioneering research and outreach activities. With a forward-looking perspective, JIMO’s ultimate goal in support of research is to enhance the educational opportunities and breadth of training for students within the fields of oceanographic and atmospheric observations. The hands-on training experience offered by renowned investigators will help ensure that the next generation of students will be trained with an in-depth understanding of the special needs related to mission-oriented operational research.
Mission StatementJIMO's mission is to foster and enrich a center of excellence in which scientific research, education, and public outreach are joined to strengthen and improve our understanding of global ocean, climate, and earth sciences through individual and collaborative research.
